Morning Sar!
So, can we discuss grocery shopping rituals? I'm so curious to hear about yours, since I assume they've changed somewhat since our time in France, n'est-ce pas?
One of the things I adored most about maternity leave this winter was shopping a la francaise...meaning, I shopped each day for that night's dinner. I always kept a stack of new recipes to try, and I loved the ritual of selecting one over my morning coffee, loading Keillor up in the carrier, and strolling leisurely through the aisles, grabbing just enough to make it through to the next day, when I got to get up and do it all over again. It was my own kind of paradise, really. Do you know how supremely beautiful...and empty....Whole Foods can be on a Tuesday morning?
Anyways, the grocery run as a full-time working mom resembles nothing of the sort. These days, it looks a little more like this: Sunday morning, write up a menu for a week's worth of meals; get in the car (usually with one kid in tow) and drive the four blocks to the store because there's inevitably going to be too much to bring home on foot; grab the biggest cart they have; fill said cart to maximum capacity; wait in line behind half of Brooklyn, drive home, unload, collapse. (And then go here for brunch, but that's another letter for another day.) Don't get me wrong - I still love every minute of it, but I do miss the calm that comes with hearing my modest Euro-style basket follow me down an empty aisle at 8 am on a weekday.
Anyways, the whole reason I started down this track was to share three quick dinner recipes that I made this week in under 30 minutes. Supremely easy and leftover-friendly, each will be going into the weekly rotation again soon.
Chicken and Cashew Lettuce Cups
The flavor is all the things you want in a ginger-y, soy sauce-y chicken dish.
Lentil-Chickpea Burgers with Avocado Harissa
So easy and you can freeze some for later. Plus, the avocado harissa (pictured above) is out. of. this. world.
Ina Garten's Gazpacho
I actually kind of hate gazpacho. Ina's is the only one I can do.
What does your grocery run involve these days?
